As we approach our AGM, we want to express our heartfelt thanks to our outgoing Chairman and long-serving Exec member, Phil Gill. Phil joined the Exec in 2015 as Club Secretary and became Chairman in 2019, guiding us through some of the most challenging years in Hallmark of Harmony’s history. From rehearsal room moves to three Musical Directors and the upheaval of the pandemic, Phil remained calm, steady and utterly committed to the chorus. Many of us felt his reassuring presence gave us a steady hand on the rudder when we needed it most.
The pandemic brought challenges none of us could have imagined, forcing us off the risers and onto Zoom. Under Phil’s leadership, and with support from the Exec and the tireless efforts of Tim Briggs, rehearsals continued online and the Hallmark spirit stayed alive. When restrictions eased, the return to in-person singing was slow and uncertain, but Phil navigated the ever-changing guidance with patience and care, helping us rebuild our sound and confidence together.
Phil’s leadership has always been rooted in integrity, kindness and genuine care for people. Members often speak of his calmness and continuity, how the chorus always felt in safe hands, and how he was consistently supportive, understanding and loyal. He led not just with responsibility but with friendship, and he always had time for others. Many new members say he was one of the first to make them feel welcome, and every bass knows the pleasure of singing alongside him.
After ten years on the Exec, six of them as Chairman, Phil has decided it is time to pass the baton and allow fresh energy and ideas to shape the next chapter. In his own words, he has been immensely honoured to serve and remains passionate about Hallmark’s future. We're happy to say Phil will continue to sing with us on the risers each Tuesday.
